Associated PressDEER PARK, Texas — Fire erupted at a petrochemical plant in the Houston area Friday, leaving five workers hospitalized and sending up a huge plume of smoke visible for miles. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the fire was at a Shell USA Inc. facility in Deer Park, a suburb east of Houston.Law enforcement received a call to help divert traffic around the plant just after 3 p.m., Harris County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Thomas Gilliland said. The city of Deer Park said in an advisory that there was no shelter-in-place order for residents.Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a tweet that the fire was caused by a “heat exchange between two heavy gas oils,” but that the fire has since been contained and been diminished. This is just another example of how so much of our taxpayer dollars are constantly going to waste. The column cited many reasons why ridership is down, but one, that I believe is also very important is crime on BART. Many seniors like myself are refusing to ride this transit system because of the crimes committed against riders.I long for the days gone by when one could step on a BART train, ride in comfort to a beautiful city and enjoy a wonderful day.Mary ForneyBrentwoodFisher, MLB to blamefor A’s move to VegasIf the Oakland A’s leave Oakland, it won’t be the fault of the mayor, City Council or the fans. The current Oakland A’s have started 2023 on pace to match the worst of the worst in MLB history. But the players who made up the core of the most recent contenders in Oakland are starting to speak out more directly against owner John Fisher and the team’s potential move to Las Vegas.Current Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt revealed that the group of stars from the 2018-2021 teams — when the A’s made the playoffs three times and just missed out on a fourth – still keep up with each other in a “massive group chat” and wonder what could have been if Fisher had not been so frugal.“We’re still talking pretty frequently and it was more so like, ‘Man if we just add a piece or two to this roster with [Marcus] Semien and [Matt] Olson and [Matt] Chapman and all the and all those guys … we got a chance to do something special here,’” Bassitt told ‘Foul Territory’, a YouTube show that features a rotation of ex-MLB players as cohosts.“And instead of kind o...

By Sara Murray and Jason Morris | CNNAt least eight of the Republican “fake electors” in Georgia have accepted immunity deals in an ongoing criminal investigation into efforts by Donald Trump and his allies to overturn the 2020 election there, according to a new court filing.Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis had previously notified all 16 GOP fake electors in Georgia that they were targets in her investigation. Last month, Willis offered immunity deals to several of the Republicans who served as pro-Trump electors and they accepted, according to the filing. The newly secured cooperators could offer insights into a key prong of Willis’s sprawling investigation into election interference: the attempts to put forward alternate slates of electors to block the certification of the 2020 presidential vote and the role Trump’s allies played in organizing the effort.Other Republicans who served as pro-Trump electors could still face legal exposure in her inve...
