Authorities believe the large fire that burned in a church in Cambridge on Easter Sunday was intentionally set, the state Department of Fire Services announced on Tuesday. Officials announced the development in a joint statement, asking for the public’s help and seeking any information as well as any photos or video of the scene on the day before the fire, the day of the fire or during firefighting operations. The FBI also shared a flyer seeking information and calling the fire an arson.“We are asking anyone with information on this fire, or who made observations in the area of the church that Sunday evening, to share it with investigators,” Cambridge Fire Chief Thomas Cahill Jr. said. “No piece of information is too small to share.” “We are keenly aware that any place of worship is a cornerstone of the community, and we want to reassure residents that we’re approaching this case with the seriousness and gravity that it deserves,” Cahill continued. The fire happened a...Yankees Notebook: Aaron Boone in awe of Shohei Ohtani’s least talked about skill

With Shohei Ohtani now in his sixth major league season, everyone in baseball knows what he’s capable of, even if they don’t always believe their eyes.Already an MVP, Rookie of the Year and two-time All-Star, the Angels’ two-way sensation has wowed audiences across the globe with his prowess at the plate and on the hill. This year alone, the lefty hitter owned a .298 average, 142 OPS+, three home runs and nine RBI entering Tuesday’s series-opener against the Yankees. The right-hander won’t pitch in this series, but he also owns a 0.86 ERA and 27 strikeouts over 21 innings and four starts. However, it’s another skill of Ohtani’s that impresses Aaron Boone the most.“His speed,” the Yankees manager said when asked, “because that’s the last thing you talk about. You watch him get down the line and it’s like, ‘Oh, and he’s the fastest guy out there, too.’ It’s amazing what he’s doing. It ...‘Designed to fail:’ Advocates highlight economic, environmental problem with Chromebooks in schools

Chromebooks purchased by schools in the pandemic are starting to hit their expiration date, an advocacy group detailed in a new report — highlighting a big problem with mass public use of cheap devices with short lives.“Laptops for each student are here to stay, meaning the possible impacts of balancing the use and sustainability of these pieces is huge,” said Lucas Rockett Gutterman, director of the U.S. PIRG Education Fund’s “Designed to Last” campaign, speaking on the report in front of the Google facility in Cambridge on Tuesday afternoon. The “Chromebook Churn” report released by the U.S. PIRG Education Fund laid out how Chromebooks now widely used in schools have a built-in “death date,” after which they can’t receive updates or access secure websites like state testing sites.Just in Massachusetts, the report said, doubling the life of Chromebooks from four to eight years would equal $34 million in savings and a ...Pete Alonso feels nostalgia playing at Dodger Stadium: ‘I just think it’s a really cool place to play’

LOS ANGELES — Every time Pete Alonso walks through the halls of Dodger Stadium, he takes in the history of the 61-year-old ballpark. It’s a special place, regardless of which team you root for or which team you wear a uniform for. Nestled in the Los Angeles basin, the Hollywood Hills and the San Gabriel Mountains provide a picturesque backdrop, with rolling green hills and palm trees above the outfield stands. The colors of the stands mimic the colors of the beaches out on the west side of town. It’s a little retro in its own way and a little classic. The weather is almost always perfect. It’s L.A. nostalgia at its best, and no sport does nostalgia quite like baseball.Alonso, too, feels that nostalgia, thinking of the legends that have come through Chavez Ravine. At 28, he’s too young to remember Sandy Koufax or Fernando Valenzuela, but the lasting impressions players like them have made aren’t lost on the Mets’ first baseman.“I just thi...Red Sox notebook: Christian Vázquez says hello from the other side

When the Red Sox traded Christian Vázquez to the Houston Astros at last summer’s trade deadline, they said goodbye to their longest-tenured player.Xander Bogaerts had debuted first, in August 2013, but signed as an amateur free agent in 2009, the year after the Red Sox selected Vázquez in the ninth round of the 2008 draft. (Vázquez debuted in July 2014.)Losing Vázquez was difficult for the team and its manager, especially since the Red Sox were in Houston for a series with the Astros at the time.“Special person, you know? And special player,” Alex Cora said of his former catcher. “When he signed here, he went through every step, from going to the academy, to winning a World Series with us.”Vázquez said it was weird to be in the visiting dugout on Tuesday afternoon.“A lot of emotions,” he said as he sat in his new team’s uniform and cap. “Good to be loved here, that means a lot.”The Twins and Red Sox play one another frequen...Robert Williams continues to embrace bench role with Celtics: ‘I just want to win’

Robert Williams is in such a better place now than he was last season that it can basically go unsaid.Last year at this time, the Celtics center was still recovering from left knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus. Now, after another surgery in September and cautious management throughout the season, Williams is not only available for the start of the playoffs, but performing at a high level.“I feel great, man,” Williams said Tuesday when asked how much better he feels than last year. “I’ll just leave it at that. I feel great.”Saturday’s Game 1 victory over the Hawks featured moments of Williams at his best. He was dominant defensively, which included a phenomenal block in the first quarter when he surged from the weak side to swat Jalen Johnson at the rim. He was active offensively with several lob dunks.Williams did so off the bench, a role he’s continuing to embrace. Last season, all 61 of his regular season games and 15 of his 17 playoff games were starts. This season, 20 of hi...Antetokounmpo sits out practice, listed as doubtful by Bucks for Wednesday vs. Heat

Clarity with Giannis Antetokounmpo will likely not come until Wednesday night’s game day against the Miami Heat, with the Milwaukee Bucks All-Star forward not practicing Tuesday due to a lower-back contusion sustained Sunday. The Bucks’ injury report in the wake of that practice listed Antetokounmpo as doubtful for Wednesday, with such designations subject to hourly change until game time. A designation of “doubtful” means the team believes there only is a 25% chance the player will play.Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer had initially expressed optimism after Tuesday’s practice about a return by Antetokounmpo in Wednesday night’s 9 p.m. Game 2 of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference playoff series. The Heat won Sunday’s series opener 130-117 at Fiserv Forum, with Antetokounmpo playing just 10:50 after taking a hard first-quarter tumble on a blocking foul by Heat forward Kevin Love.“We have 24-plus hours before game time, so he’ll get t...Ralph Yarl shedding ‘buckets of tears,’ shooter out on bond

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Russia and Venezuela reviewed some of their hundreds of bilateral agreements covering the financial, energy, agricultural and other sectors during discussions between their top diplomats and other high-level officials Tuesday in the South American country. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Venezuelan counterpart Yván Gil held a joint press conference in Caracas hours after the former arrived in the country in the second stop of a tour of four Latin American nations. Both men vowed continued support for each other’s country and condemned the economic sanctions Washington has imposed on them.“We fully support the position of our Venezuelan friends,” Lavrov said. “It is their country … and we are going to support it in any way so that the Venezuelan economy becomes an independent economy from the pressures of the United States and other western actors.”Lavrov’s remarks were translated from Russian to Spanish by a government-provided translat...Latest news
