Bats quiet as Twins drop series finale to Guardians

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:48:51 GMT

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Guardians started their day at the plate by ambushing Twins pitcher Joe Ryan, three of the first four hitters reaching base with singles. In those first at-bats, they did something that the Twins  couldn’t do all series: score a run that did not come via home run.On Sunday, the Twins didn’t even do that. Their franchise-record 18-day home-run streak came to an end in a 2-0 loss in the series finale to the Guardians at Progressive Field. The Twins did not get their first hit until the seventh inning against Cleveland starter Cal Quantrill, who had retired 16 straight batters before Alex Kirilloff sent his first hit of the season out to right field. Quantrill encountered little challenge all day against a Twins lineup that finished the series having scored just five runs.Their best opportunity against the right-hander came in the second inning when he hit Byron Buxton with a pitch to lead off the inning before walking Kirilloff and Joey Gallo. But the Twins’ wo...

150 years later, Illinois bridge tragedy among nation's worst

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:48:51 GMT

DIXON, Ill. (AP) — Gertie Wadsworth was in the arms of her grandmother that bright day when sunshine dissolved distasteful memories of a long, brutal winter. Christan Goble held the 3 1/2-year-old girl in a crowd of more than 200 on the bridge over the Rock River. After a procession down Galena Avenue from the Baptist Church on May 4, 1873, the Rev. J.H. Pratt began baptizing parishioners in the brisk, rapid current. Then, with a sharp crack and a crescendo of shrieking spectators loaded on the pedestrian walkway in front of towering trusses, the 4-year-old bridge twisted, splintered and rolled over. Forty-six people perished, many immured by the unrelenting gridiron just below the water's surface. Along with 56 injuries, the Truesdell bridge tragedy, 150 years ago Thursday, remains the worst vehicular-bridge disaster in American history.“It's not as though the bridge just collapsed and went straight down,” says Tom Wadsworth, 70, a retired magazine editor and expert on the calamity....

Charlotte and her mother, Kate, the Princess of Wales, sang along as Perry, dressed in a gold foil ball gown, performed “Roar.”“Top Gun” star Tom Cruise appeared in a pre-recorded video message, saying: “Pilot to pilot. These are rough times for all the sadists taking pleasure in the Colorado Rockies’ historically bad April.A team that couldn’t do anything right in the opening month of the season is now red hot, having won six of its last seven games after bludgeoning the New York Mets 13-6 at Citi Field on a sunny Sunday afternoon.Rookie center fielder Brenton Doyle showed off his power and speed in a three-hit, three-RBI, three-run day, reaching on a pair of infield singles, stealing a base and smacking his first big-league home run.Randal Grichuk and Kris Bryant mashed dingers of their own — the latter part of a seven-run fifth inning — and Colorado scored a season-high 13 runs on 14 hits to overcome an erratic start from Ryan Feltner.Colorado is now 8-4 since starting the season 6-17, with a three-game set at NL Central leader Pittsburgh starting Monday.Colorado Rockies’ Randal Grichuk hits a solo home run off New York Mets starting pitcher Joey Lucchesi in the first inn...

De Gea error gifts West Ham a 1-0 win over Man United in EPL

LONDON (AP) — David De Gea’s error in Manchester United’s 1-0 loss to West Ham loosened his team’s grip on the final Champions League qualification place on Sunday. The Spain goalkeeper let Said Benrahma’s hopeful shot from 20 meters slip over his glove and into the net to condemn Erik Ten Hag’s team to back-to-back defeats in the Premier League.United now lies just one point ahead of a rapidly advancing Liverpool, albeit with a game in hand, but an eighth loss on the road this season could prove as costly for the visitors as it was priceless for West Ham.The Hammers climbed seven points above the relegation zone and are surely now safe.De Gea’s match began inauspiciously when his poor clearance flew to the feet of Declan Rice, whose run into the area was only curtailed by a last-ditch tackle from Wout Weghorst.Marcus Rashford curled over for the visitors while Bruno Fernandes and Antony smashed low shots narrowly wide.Christian Eriksen’s effort also floated too high before Ras...

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Under-strength New Zealand enjoyed a consolation 47-run win in the fifth and final one-day cricket international to deny Pakistan a clean sweep of the series on Sunday. Pakistan slipped to No. 3 in the ODI rankings behind Australia and India after it was bowled out for 252 in 46.1 overs — its lowest total in the series — as run-machine Babar Azam went for just one run in his 100th ODI in the final game.Pakistan rose to the top of the ODI rankings after it won the fourth game of the series on Friday, but needed a 5-0 sweep to retain its No. 1 spot. Half centuries by Will Young (87) and captain Tom Latham (59) formed the backbone of New Zealand’s total of 299 in 49.3 overs after Latham won his third successive toss in the Karachi-leg of the series, but decided to bat first for the first time.Middle-order batter Iftikhar Ahmed missed out on his first ODI century and made a fighting unbeaten 94 off 72 balls after Pakistan’s top-order stuttered for the firs...
