WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz needs to beat old pal Holger Rune to stay on course for a potential Wimbledon showdown with Novak Djokovic.No. 1 Alcaraz and No. 6 Rune will square off Wednesday on Centre Court for a spot in the semifinals. They go way back — OK, not that far back, they’re both just 20, after all. Rune is six days older than the Spaniard. It’s the first time since 2004 that more than one player under 21 has reached the quarterfinals at the All England Club.Rune, who is from Denmark, lost in the first round last year in his Wimbledon debut. He’s been a two-time quarterfinalist at the French Open. They are 1-1 head to head. Rune acknowledged that he peeked ahead to this matchup when the draw came out. He recalled a time playing doubles with Alcaraz as kids.“It’s funny … because obviously we’re two singles players, I would call us,” Rune said. “When a singles player plays doubles, they want to cover the court by themselves. We both try and did that a ...

Zelenskyy fumes over NATO’s ‘vague’ membership plan for Ukraine

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:06:03 GMT

VILNIUS — NATO leaders on Tuesday said they would invite Ukraine to join the alliance only when conditions are met and allies agree — a move intended as a gesture of support for Ukrainians but which was met with disappointment in Kyiv. “We will be in a position to extend an invitation to Ukraine to join the Alliance when Allies agree and conditions are met,” the leaders wrote in a summit communiqué, published Tuesday evening. The carefully-crafted sentence is the outcome of intensive negotiations among the alliance’s 31 members. While all allies agree Ukraine cannot join NATO while the war against Russia is ongoing, many of Kyiv’s partners had pushed for a strong political gesture at the summit, saying that it is on the path toward membership. Washington and Berlin, however, opposed giving Kyiv concrete pledges. In the summit communiqué, the allies stressed that Ukraine is developing a closer relationship with the alliance and that Tuesday’s wording represents a step f...

Kenley Jansen’s All-Star experience illustrates overall Red Sox conundrum

The Red Sox got about as much screen time in the 2023 All-Star Game as they had players in it.One player, one out.Kenley Jansen was Boston’s lone representative on Tuesday night, and his moment on the mound lasted exactly one batter and three pitches.Kenley's first batter faced: K pic.twitter.com/tvwQSrIC2d— Red Sox (@RedSox) July 12, 2023It was a short, but selfless moment. Before the game, Team American League manager Dusty Baker informed him that he’d close out the ninth inning should it be a save situation, but when Team NL put up a fight in the eighth and Felix Bautista’s pitch count rose to 28 with two outs and a runner on, Jansen agreed to get in the game early.Jansen took the mound, fired three strikes, and walked off again. If someone left the room to get a glass of water, they probably missed the whole outing.Since Brock Holt’s own solo jaunt in 2015, the Red Sox have had at least three All-Stars each season. Larry Nassar was stabbed in his cell and the attack was not seen by prison cameras, AP source says

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:06:03 GMT

By MICHAEL R. SISAK and MICHAEL BALSAMO (Associated Press)Investigators probing disgraced former sports doctor Larry Nassar’s stabbing Sunday at a federal penitentiary in Florida are lacking a key piece of evidence: video of the assault.Nassar was attacked inside his cell, a blind spot for prison surveillance cameras that only record common areas and corridors, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. In federal prison parlance, because of the lack of video, it is known as an “unwitnessed event.”It’s the second time Nassar, the former U.S. women’s gymnastics team doctor, has been assaulted in federal custody while he’s serving decades in prison for sexually abusing athletes and possessing explicit images of children. The attack, which left Nassar hospitalized in stable condition with injuries including a collapsed lung, underscored persistent problems at the federal Bureau of Prisons.Despite the Biden administration’s vow ...

SAN DIEGO - New state legislation signed into the state budget Monday was officially signed into law Tuesday by Gov. Gavin Newsom that aims to help foster children in the Golden State by covering the cost of college for those kids in need. San Diego-based foster advocates say this is life changing for San Diego foster youth exiting the system looking to attend college for free and it's not just tuition. This also accommodates for housing, textbooks, and tech; a benefit that goes far beyond turning the tassel. “We’re really taking another step to break down those economic inequities that our foster youth might have and certainly increase the social connections that come with going to postsecondary education," shared Steven Jella who is the Chief Program Officer with San Diego Youth Services. Sarah Pauter is the Senior Projects Manager with John Burton Advocates for Youth. She and her siblings grew up in the foster care system in the South Bay. At 18, she went off to San Diego State U...
