Jordan Westburg, drafted in the first round of the 2020 MLB draft, hit his first career home run. And, most pivotally, Colton Cowser — picked in the first round of the 2021 draft — hit a ninth-inning double to score 2019 second-round selection Gunnar Henderson. The Orioles beat the Phillies, 3-2, improving to an American League-best 62-38 and moving 2.5 games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East.In the 2010s, the Philadelphia 76ers became known for their emphasis on rebuilding when the pro basketball team suffered through several losing seasons while they collected draft picks. BURG, Germany (AP) — Two teachers in eastern Germany tried to counter the far-right activities of students at their small town high school. They counseled bullies who threatened to beat up immigrant classmates. They gave more lessons about their country’s Nazi past. They invited in a Black rapper to talk about mutual respect.None of it helped. In desperation, Laura Nickel and Max Teske wrote a public letter in which they described an atmosphere of intimidation at Mina Witkojc School in Burg. They reported students greeting each other with the Nazi salute, scratching swastikas on their desks and playing music with racist lyrics in the hallways. “Teachers and students who openly fight against far-right students and teachers fear for their safety,” the two said in the letter they sent to local newspapers. “The problem has to be recognized and openly fought. Schools should be places free of fear, full of open-mindedness and safety for everyone and cannot provide a home for t...Youth coach hopes Women’s World Cup raises soccer’s profile for Maori people in New Zealand

HAMILTON, New Zealand (AP) — When New Zealand kicked off in the Women’s World Cup opener against Norway last weeek, just three of the 23 Football Ferns traced their roots to the Indigenous Maori people.By contrast, when the Kiwis hosted the Women’s Rugby World Cup last year, more than half of the players on its 30-person championship team were Indigenous. The sport of soccer sits far behind rugby in the national consciousness of New Zealand, and Maori representation in coaching is even smaller by comparison. But a youth coach is among those leading the charge to change the landscape of soccer in New Zealand, and sports more broadly for the Maori people.Tarena Ranui is one of the leading youth coaches in New Zealand and the 2019 junior coach of the year. She works at Ngaruawahia High School, a mostly Maori school 20 minutes outside of Hamilton in the Waikato region.Until a year ago, the school had no air conditioning or heating. Buckets collected rainwater from leaky roofs. The 45-yea...South Korea’s Casey Phair becomes the youngest ever World Cup player at 16 years and 26 days of age

SYDNEY (AP) — Throughout South Korea’s Women’s World Cup opener against Colombia on Tuesday, players stayed loose behind the goal. Early in the 78th minute, one player broke away from the group.
